Bioengineered nanomedicines to oral delivery of anti-diabetic peptides

Prof. Bruno Sarmento is Principal Investigator and Group Leader of the Nanomedicines and Translational Drug Delivery group at the Institute for Investigation and Innovation in Health (i3S), University of Porto, Portugal and Professor at Instituto Universitário de Ciências da Saúde (IUCS) at CESPU.

His current research is focused on the development of functionalized nanomedicines and materials and their application in the pharmaceutical and biomedical fields. In particular, he is interested in the establishment of nanoformulations of advanced functional biomaterials and understanding their interaction with cells and biological surfaces, with interest in diabetes, cancer and infectious diseases. He has also specialized in mucosal tissue engineering models to validate functionalized nanomedicines and to perform in vitro/in vivo correlation.

He published more than 370 papers in international journals (H index 53), 54 book chapters and edited 5 books in the field of nanomedicine, biomaterials and biological barriers.

Bruno Sarmento was the Chair of the Nanomedicines and Nanoscale Drug Delivery Focus Group of the Controlled Release Society, and is member of the Board of the Spanish-Portugal Local Chapter of the Controlled Release Society. He is editor of European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Journal of Controlled Release, Pharmaceutics and Expert Opinion on Drug Delivery.
